General Features

Halmahera is in North Maluku Provence, geographically, it lies between 3^o south latitude and 124^o – 129^o east longitudes.

Halmahera occupies a total area of 103,381 km² of which 3,200 km² land and the rest is sea. It has populations of 853,161 inhabitants.

 

Climate

Halmahera is an archipelago lying within the tropical and equatorial ever wet zone, causing of homogenizing effect on the climate. Rainfall exists most of the year in Halmahera.

Two monsoons blow in this area, which are the West monsoon (wet monsoon) from December to March and the East Monsoon (dry monsoon) from May to October. The transitional periods are April and November. The minimum average temperature is 22,3^oC and maximum 32,5^oC and humidity is 83,5% thought the year.

History

Ternate is the capital city, which famed as Spice Island. Ternate was in the 16th and 17th century famed throughout the world as suppliers of spices especially cloves. No wonder that it was the scene of fierce rivalry among the mayor seafaring nations of Europe during that era of European expansion. The Portuguese were the first European expansion. The Portuguese were the first European to reach the islands, establishing themselves on the Ternate and Tidore in 1521. Subsequently, cloves trees on Ternate and nearby islands were almost wiped out. Remains of a Portuguese, Dutch, Spanish and British presence can still be found on many of the island, especially in Ternate. There are seven fortress; the great number of Indonesia that’s why besides the well known of fort City is also know as the center of Kingdom Area consist of four Sultanates: Ternate, Jailolo, Tidore, and Bacan unified in one word “Moloku Kie Raha”.

How to Get Halmahera

There are daily flights of Merpati Nusantara Airlines connect Ternate with Manado in North Sulawesi and some flights from Wings Air. Pelni has also regular be weekly lines from Belawan, Jakarta, Surabaya, Makasar, Ambon, Bitung, Sorong, Monokwari, Biak, Jayapura and on three times a week planes head for Galela, Kao and Morotai in North Halmahera.

Flora And Fauna

Clove and nutmeg are most grown in the North Maluku, since these island produced spices (mostly cloves) since ancient times. These spices were an ingredient in ancient Egyptian embalming process. The Chinese used it as a kind of breadth sweeteners cinnamon, sago palm, local orchids, matowa wood, and also gufasa wood is grown every where in this region. Bird, like the double tailed, and racket tailed king fisher, the giant red crested cockatoo, orange crested cockatoo, parakeets, the gong-bird. Bacan monkey, lizards, cuscus, variety of butterflies, oysters and canary crabs.

Halmahera has various dances that are assimilated with the society surroundings and local traditions, among others. Dances performed at traditional ceremonies, public dances, and mystical dances.

Historical Assets

The Orange Fortress

It dates back to the 13th century, it is 60% in good condition. The location is in the center of Ternate city. (See Picture)

The Santo Pedro Fortress

It dates back to 1522, it is 30% in good condition, and on at 6 km distance from Ternate city.

The Kalumata Fortress

It is Portuguese inheritances from 1540. It is 30% in good condition.

The Ternate Sultanate Kedaton

It dates back to 1234. It is 90% in good condition and now becomes a museum.

The Ternate Sultanate Mosque

This Mosque dates back to the 13th century it is 90% in good condition.

The Toluca Fortress

It dates back to 1512, it is 60% in good condition and on a 5 km distance from Ternate city.

In Ternate

The Afo Clove Tree

Is the oldest clove tree in the world, with about 400 years old. The trunks has a very big diameters. It still produce more than 600 kg in one harvest time. (See Picture)

The Gamalama Mountain

This mountain has three crater pools and a beautiful natural panorama on a height of 1,721 meters, located at the island of Ternate and its ideal for hiking and climbing. Firstly, it erupted in 1973. 250 years later, in 1987 it erupted again.

Batu Angus

The result of an eruption residues of the Gamalama mountain in 1737. The surroundings have a very exotic, beautiful natural panorama beside, it is a historical spot for the Japanese second World War. (See Picture)

Laguna Lake

South from Ternate, the main road climbs to Ngade village. A lovely lake filled with lotus plants. The Lake existed because of erosion. It is 7 km from the town and reachable by car.

Sulamadaha Beach

It is located at Ternate, has an exotic black shandy beach with a very beautiful natural panorama. It is very suitable place for swimming. It can be reached by car at 14 km distance from the center of town. (See Picture)

In Tobelo

Luari Beach

It is located at Tobelo, its located about 135 km from Ternate. An exotic white sandy beach resort with a gorgeous natural panorama. It is a very suitable and ideal place for swimming. It can be reached by car at 14 km distance from town.

In Galela

Duma Lake

It has beautiful panorama. It is about 10 km from the town of Galela and reachable by car.

A Hot Water Spring

It is located at Mamuya river of the foot Mamuya Mountain.

Pune Village

The remainders of world war II can be seen in this village such as: Gun, Bunker etc.

In Kao

Bobale Island

It is front of Kao, has beautiful white sandy beach, and very exiting for scuba diving snorkeling, wind surfing and game fishing.

In Jailolo
